Wahiba Sands Guide: All You Must Know Before You Go
Oman sounds quite exotic, doesn’t it? Although it’s not one of the most popular travel destinations, it’s perfect for those seeking something unique—a completely different culture and extraordinary natural beauty. Oman offers both sea and mountains, as well as one of the most stunning natural wonders: the vast, seemingly endless Wahiba Sands desert.
The golden dunes span an impressive 12,000 square kilometers! Waves of sand stretch across the landscape, rising in some areas to heights of 100 meters or more. Impressive numbers, aren’t they? Seeing it with your own eyes, “experiencing” the desert through various organized activities, and feeling its grandeur is a unique experience I highly recommend to anyone planning a trip to Oman.
This enormous desert offers not only breathtaking views but also fun, unique experiences: riding a camel over golden dunes, camping under the starry sky, enjoying a cup of tea by the fire surrounded by endless desert, or climbing and descending the “waving” dunes.
In this guide, I’ll share my insights and helpful tips. You’ll find information on how to reach the Wahiba Sands, the best time to travel, and what to see and do in this unique place.
Things To Do In The Wahiba Sands Desert
I’ve already mentioned a few interesting activities, but Wahiba Sands offers even more unforgettable experiences. Among the highlights is a visit to a Bedouin village, where you can get an up-close look at the daily lives of desert locals and gain insight into the nomadic way of life. Another unique experience is climbing the dunes, which are constantly reshaped by the wind. Watching these changes while feeling the sand shift beneath your feet at the top of a dune is truly remarkable.
Watching the sunset or sunrise in the desert is a magical sight you’ll remember for a lifetime. Here, you’ll also encounter unique flora and fauna, unlike anything we’re used to seeing. Wahiba Sands offers exclusive activities, such as sandboarding, dune safaris, and even an overnight stay under the starry desert sky. For a romantic experience, a hot air balloon ride over the desert is sure to leave a lasting impression.
For adrenaline lovers, I recommend a thrilling jeep ride through the desert dunes – an adventure you won’t soon forget. The desert also provides a perfect setting for photography, whether you prefer taking selfies or a professional photo session. The desert landscape will without a doubt add a unique charm to your photos.
How To Get To Wahiba Sands
There are several ways to reach the Wahiba Desert. The most convenient option, offering the most freedom to plan your own schedule, is by car. If you’re staying nearby, taxi services are also available. Public transport is another option, as Oman has a fairly convenient bus network.
How to reach Wahiba Sands (with Bidiyah as the main arrival point) from different cities in Oman:
- From Muscat: by car, taxi, or bus. Distance: around 200 km.
- From Nizwa: by car or taxi. Distance: around 180 km.
- From Sur: by car or taxi. The bus doesn’t cover the entire route, so a combination of bus and taxi is an option. Distance: around 100–110 km.
- From Salalah: by car. Taking a taxi is possible, but it may not be ideal due to the long travel time (around 11–12 hours by car in regular traffic). You can also combine different transport options, such as taking buses with transfers or flying part of the way and then continuing by bus. Distance: 1,000 km.
Another way to experience the desert is by booking a tour. Options range from guided visits to thrilling adventures like quad biking and camel treks. Most tours are organized from the capital, Muscat, but some companies also pick up tourists from other parts of the country.
Best Time To Visit Wahiba Sands
During the summer months, the sun here is extremely intense, so I recommend avoiding this time of year. If you’re sensitive to heat, the entire period from mid-April to the end of September can be excessively hot, especially as there’s little shade available in the desert. Additionally, this time of year is often quite windy in the desert, which can lead to some camps being closed, and the risk of encountering a sandstorm is certainly unappealing. For a more pleasant experience, plan your visit between October and early April, when the weather is far more suitable for exploring Wahiba Sands.
Tip: If you’re visiting the desert in the evening or plan to stay until nighttime (or overnight), make sure to bring warmer clothes. The temperature difference between day, evening, and night can be significant; for example, while daytime temperatures may reach around 30°C, at night it can drop to 15°C or even lower.

Best Accommodation Options
There are many accommodation options in and around the desert. Those looking to stay overnight will find various camps offering tent accommodations. Options range from simple setups to more luxurious choices, catering to different budgets. For me, this experience was truly exotic and unique, allowing a full immersion in the spirit of the desert.
For affordable options, camps like Crescent Desert Private Camp, SandGlass Camp, and Oman Desert Private Camp receive excellent reviews. Prices at these camps start from just 50 euros per night for two people.
Many camps also offer additional services. You can choose accommodations with or without meals and enjoy various activities, including excursions and desert adventure experiences. Some services are included in the accommodation price, while others are available at an extra cost. This range allows everyone to find options suited to their preferences and budget.
If staying in a tent isn’t your preference and you’re looking for a budget-friendly option, the highly-rated Oriental Nights Rest House and Home X4 offer stays at around 50–60 euros per night for two people. For accommodations that include breakfast, or both breakfast and dinner, excellent options are Moon Light Camp, Arabian Nights CAMP, and Safari Desert Camp, where prices range from approximately 70 to 140 euros per night.
For those seeking luxury, choices include both tents and apartments. Popular tent accommodations like Desert Moments Glamping – Full Privacy and Just For You Starwatching Tent offer a truly special experience. A night in one of these luxurious tents costs from 700 euros. If you prefer not to stay in a tent, you’ll find equally luxurious lodges, apartments, and villas, such as Desert Nights Resort, Marbella Bungalows Desert, R61 Sunset Chalet, and Arabian Nights Resort & Spa, with prices for two people ranging from 200 to 400 euros per night.
Tips For Traveling To Wahiba Sands
- Choose lightweight, breathable clothing. If you’ll be in the desert in the evening or overnight, make sure to bring warm layers made from natural materials, like wool.
- Bring sun protection for your skin, a head covering, and be sure to carry plenty of water.
- Though it may seem romantic or charming, avoid walking barefoot in the desert. The sand can get extremely hot and may also conceal various creatures, including snakes.
- Driving in the desert can be challenging. If you’re not an experienced driver in such conditions, it’s best not to drive yourself. Instead, consider a 4×4 excursion, or hiring a driver.
- Before entering the desert, ensure your fuel tank is full, as there are no gas stations along the way.
- Carry a first-aid kit with you.
