The first thing that will greet you here is peace, pleasant solitude, and a breathtaking landscape. Since the beach is vast, it is never crowded, so many visitors often feel as though they are the only ones there. Have you ever been alone on a beach? Probably not, so here you’ll get to experience how amazing and unusual that feeling is. The subtle color contrasts are also captivating: the golden sand of the beach blends beautifully with the brownish hues of the volcanic mountains, while it elegantly contrasts with the deep blue of the ocean.

Tip: While the ocean undoubtedly invites you to swim, especially in such a beautiful setting, swimming at Cofete Beach is dangerous due to strong winds and underwater currents. Keep in mind that there are no lifeguards on this beach.

What To See Around Playa de Cofete Beach

First, you can visit the village of Cofete, located near the beach. Here, you will find a few small houses and complete tranquility. There are very few locals, and due to the difficult access, large tourist crowds are rare. As a result, the village exudes a truly special authenticity.

The Cofete cemetery is a striking contrast to the beach idyll. However, if you want to see as much of the area as possible, it is worth a visit, especially since it’s quite rare to find a cemetery on a beach. The cemetery was once established by locals so they wouldn’t have to transport the deceased tens of kilometers away for burial. The place is very subtle and ascetic.

You should also visit Casa Winter, a villa built at the beginning of World War II by German engineer G. Winter. The villa is surrounded by various legends: some claim that during the war, it served as a spy center, while others say it was used as a meeting place for Nazis. Yet other stories suggest that the villa was once a submarine base. It is said that submarines could reach it through underground tunnels directly from the ocean. Today, the villa is uninhabited, and you can reach it by car (keep in mind the road is very bad) or on foot.

Opening Hours: You can visit Casa Winter from Tuesday to Sunday, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., and from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

It would truly be a shame if a natural wonder like this lacked scenic viewpoints to fully appreciate its beauty. Thankfully, there are several spots to take in the beach’s beauty from above. Hike To Cofete Beach

I consider this hike one of the best experiences. If you’re ready to reach the beach on foot and enjoy breathtaking views, go for it! The hike starts from the town of Morro Jable. There are several routes to choose from depending on your capabilities, but none of them are particularly easy due to the distance. The trail stretches about 20 kilometers, and the hike takes around 5 to 7 hours. Be prepared for a rocky, uneven path with steep ascents and descents, so good physical condition, comfortable footwear, and a bottle of water are essential!

The distance is long, but if you want to shorten it, start your hike from here – this will cut both the distance and time by about half.

Tip: Start your hike in the morning or late afternoon, especially if you’re hiking during the warmer months. The midday sun will be intense, and there are few opportunities for shade, which can make the hike more challenging.

How To Reach Playa de Cofete Beach

Cofete Beach is located in the southernmost part of the island, within the Jandia Natural Park, which is on the peninsula of the same name. The beach is quite long, stretching from the small island of Siete Viudas in the north to Roque del Morro in the south.

As I’ve mentioned, reaching this place isn’t easy and can be a challenge for some. The route to the beach is made more difficult by the mountains, which act as a natural barrier along its entire length. So, it’s best to rent a jeep, as you’ll need a vehicle capable of navigating unpaved roads.

The road to the beach typically starts from Morro Jable – just follow the signs. The distance is about 20 kilometers, but almost the entire route is a gravel road, making driving tricky. Part of the route involves driving uphill, while another part requires descending. Before you start the descent, be sure to stop at the viewing platform – the view is breathtaking.

You can also take a bus from Morro Jable, but this is likely the least comfortable option.

Practical Information: The bus from Morro Jable to Playa de Cofete departs twice a day: at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Ticket prices range from 8 to 9 euros. You can find detailed schedule information here.

The easiest and least hassle option is to book a tour. This way, you won’t have to worry about how to get to the beach, and you’ll learn interesting information about the area. Tours typically last about 5 to 6 hours.
