Calderón Hondo
One of the hikes that left a lasting impression on me is Calderón Hondo. The hike is not very difficult, so even those without much physical preparation can enjoy it. The trail stretches for only a few kilometers one way. The hike offers more enjoyment than it demands in terms of endurance or strength. The route winds around one of the best-preserved volcanoes in Fuerteventura – Calderón Hondo, providing hikers with breathtaking views of the island. Moreover, the hike is also suitable for families with children.
In this guide, I will share my experience and explain when it’s best to embark on this adventure, what you shouldn’t forget to bring, how you can reach Calderón Hondo, and much more information that I believe will be useful for those planning the hike.
Where Is Calderón Hondo
The Calderon Hondo volcano is located in the northern part of the island and is one of the best-preserved volcanoes in Fuerteventura. Calderon Hondo is quite close to popular and well-loved tourist towns: it is about 8 km from Corralejo, around 16 km from La Oliva, and about 4 km from Lajares.
How To Get To Calderón Hondo
The easiest way to get to Calderón Hondo is by car. The starting point of the hike is just 8 kilometers from Corralejo, and almost 100 kilometers from Costa Calma, which is about an hour and a half drive. For the shortest hike, you can leave your car at the Camino Calderas parking lot. If you prefer a longer route, start the hike from the town of Lajares. This is the route I took, and I was very satisfied with my choice.
Traveling by public transport in Fuerteventura is inexpensive, so if you don’t have a car, you can take a bus to Calderón Hondo. For longer distances, you will likely need to transfer, for example, from Costa Calma, and in that case, the journey would take a few hours. However, from the closer towns, traveling by bus is a quick, convenient, and affordable option. From La Oliva, the bus arrives in just a few minutes and costs only a couple of euros, while from Corralejo, the trip takes just over half an hour and costs up to four euros.
One of the best ways to reach Calderón Hondo is by booking a tour. Traveling with a guide, you will not only experience the uniqueness of the hike but also learn many interesting facts about the area. There are several types of tours available: you can choose a daytime tour, an evening tour with the chance to witness a stunning sunset, or even a night tour.

- The duration of the hike is approximately 1.5–2 hours.
- The hike is not difficult and does not require much endurance or special physical preparation. There are no steep ascents or descents, making it easy to tackle even with children.
- There’s a good chance you’ll be greeted by the “locals”. No, not people, but cute chipmunks. You’ll see quite a few of them, but they are considered invasive animals on the island. While many tourists tend to feed them and they may seem to be begging for food, it’s best not to do so, as human food is not suitable for them. However, nuts are always a good option.
Best Time To Hike To Calderón Hondo
Spring and autumn are the ideal times for hiking. The weather is mild, and you won’t be bothered by the scorching heat. Moreover, there are fewer tourists. Winter can also be a great time – temperatures range from about 18–22 degrees, which is perfect for hiking.
Best Time Of Day For Hiking
If you’re hiking during the warmer months, the morning or late afternoon would be the best times, as the sun won’t be as intense. If you’re hiking in winter, the time of day doesn’t matter much – the sun won’t be too strong, making it a pleasure to walk the trail.
Tip: If you collect the best sunsets, choose the evening for your hike – the sunset from the top of the volcano is breathtaking.
What To Carry When Going For A Hike
- Camera. A camera or phone is essential, as you’ll want to capture stunning shots while hiking and, of course, take some photos of the chipmunks.
- Sun protection. Be sure to bring sunscreen, lotion, or other skin protection, as well as a hat, especially if you’re hiking on a sunny day. Remember, even in winter, Fuerteventura is warm and sunny. There won’t be much shade, and the sun will shine intensely.
- Comfortable footwear. The hiking trail is rocky and uneven, so comfortable, breathable footwear is very important. Hiking boots or sturdy yet comfortable sneakers will work perfectly.
- Drinking water. Although the hiking route is fairly easy and doesn’t require much energy, there are no water sources along the way, so make sure to bring enough drinking water.
- Warmer clothes. It’s worth noting that it can be windy, and the wind is even stronger at the top of the volcano, so a light sweater can be very helpful.
- Snacks. If you plan to spend more time on the hike, enjoy the views, or wait for the sunset, bring some snacks – having a picnic in this unique spot is a great idea.
