Pico de la Zarza Hiking Guide (Photos & Parking Location)
While Fuerteventura is often associated with stunning beaches, the island also boasts impressive mountains that add even more exotic beauty to its breathtaking landscape. Among them is Pico de la Zarza, a popular hiking destination located on the vast Jandia Peninsula in the island’s southern region.
Pico de la Zarza
Soaring over 800 meters above sea level, this iconic peak offers visitors an unforgettable experience. It provides the chance to enjoy panoramic views that feel almost like a bird’s-eye perspective. Formed by volcanic activity that began over 20 million years ago, Pico de la Zarza stands as a natural wonder shaped by ancient geological forces.
The hike to the 807-meter-high summit is a truly memorable adventure that will reward you with awe-inspiring views and unforgettable natural surroundings. In this guide, I’ll share essential information about what to see at Pico de la Zarza, how to get there, and useful tips for anyone planning this unforgettable hike.
Where Is Pico De La Zarza
Pico de la Zarza is located on the Jandia Peninsula in the southern part of Fuerteventura. The hiking trail to the summit begins in the seaside town of Morro Jable. This iconic peak is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts drawn by the stunning views and unique volcanic landscapes.
How To Reach Pico De La Zarza
Since the hike begins in Morro Jable, most hikers travel to this town first. If you’re staying at the Costa Calma resort and want to reach Morro Jable, the most convenient options are by car or public transport. The two locations are about 20 kilometers apart, which takes around 20 minutes by car or 30 minutes to an hour by public transport, depending on the chosen route.
If you’re coming from the opposite direction, such as from Puerto de la Cruz, you can reach Morro Jable in about 40 minutes by car, covering a distance of approximately 22 kilometers.
For those traveling from farther away, such as the capital Puerto del Rosario, you can reach Morro Jable by car or public transport. The public transport journey takes around 2 to 3 hours, depending on the route. By car, the trip takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes, assuming no traffic (a distance of 80 to 90 km).
If you’re coming from even farther away, such as Corralejo, the journey by public transport will take 3 to 4 hours or longer, depending on the specific route. By car, you can cover the distance of 100 to 120 kilometers in about 1 hour and 45 minutes. Traveling by car is the fastest and most convenient way to explore the island.
One of the best ways to reach Pico De La Zarza is by booking a tour. With an experienced guide, you’ll not only enjoy the distinctive beauty of the hike but also discover fascinating insights about the area.

The hike to Pico de la Zarza is a unique experience, offering the chance to observe how the island’s landscape transforms, revealing striking contrasts along the way. Many hikers expect to see increasingly stunning views as they ascend. However, there is much more to explore, as you will also encounter a rich variety of plant and animal life throughout the journey.

After hiking Pico de la Zarza, explore nearby spots that highlight the natural beauty of southern Fuerteventura. Here are some my recommended places to explore:
Morro Jable Promenade
Located close to the starting point of the Pico de la Zarza hike, the Morro Jable seaside promenade is perfect for unwinding after your trek. Take a relaxing walk along the coast, enjoy ocean views, or visit one of the local cafes for a refreshing drink or a satisfying meal. It’s a great way to soak in the island’s laid-back atmosphere.
Playa del Matorral
Playa del Matorral, a long sandy beach near Morro Jable, is known for its clear waters and serene surroundings. Its iconic lighthouse adds a unique charm to the landscape. Whether you want to swim, sunbathe, or simply enjoy the peaceful environment, this beach is the ideal spot to relax after a challenging hike.

Cofete Beach
Though farther from Morro Jable, Cofete Beach is a must-visit for its wild, untouched beauty. Surrounded by rugged mountains and the vast Atlantic Ocean, it offers an unforgettable, remote experience. Swimming is dangerous here due to strong currents. However, the breathtaking scenery and serene atmosphere make it a worthwhile trip for nature lovers and photographers alike.
Tips For Trekking To Pico De La Zarza
- Wear Proper Hiking Shoes: Avoid sandals or beach flip-flops, as they are unsuitable for this hike. Wear comfortable, breathable clothing and layer up, as it’s warmer at the starting point but much cooler and windier at the summit.
- Bring Plenty of Water and Snacks: There are no shops along the trail, so make sure to bring enough water. If you think you might get hungry, pack some snacks as well.
- Use Sun Protection: There is almost no shade along the route, so even if the weather feels cool, the sun can still be intense. Wear a hat and apply sunscreen to protect yourself.
- Start Early in the Morning: Begin your hike as early as possible to avoid climbing during the hottest part of the day. Remember, you’ll also need time to hike back, and leaving too late may mean returning after sunset.
- Avoid Hiking on Rainy or Windy Days: Strong winds and rain can make the hike challenging and even dangerous, so choose a clear, calm day for your adventure.
