Elephant Rock (Jabal AlFil) in AlUla, Saudi Arabia

Jabal Al-Fil, also known as Elephant Rock, is one of the most visited landmarks in Saudi Arabia, located near the town of Al Ula.

Standing before a stunning landscape of golden sand, dotted with rocky outcrops, the 50-meter-high rock uniquely resembles an elephant. This geological wonder is the result of thousands of years of sand and wind erosion.

Elephant Rock AlUla

Elephant Rock is set in a beautiful, natural landscape, far from the hustle and bustle of Al Ula. The vibrant combination of brown and orange hues on the rock perfectly complements the surrounding environment.

It’s an ideal spot for photography enthusiasts to capture breathtaking images. Whether at sunset or under the moonlight, you can take even more impressive shots of Elephant Rock. The atmosphere around the rock continually attracts tourists, and for me, it was one of the most spectacular places during my three-week tour of Saudi Arabia.

Adjacent to the rock, several food stalls offer a variety of drinks and snacks. If you need a break, there are plenty of places to relax. The circular seating areas in front of the rock are particularly popular, so it’s best to arrive early, as seats are likely to be taken as the evening approaches.

In the evening, the area and the rock itself are illuminated by soft lighting, making the view even more vivid and spectacular. Immerse yourself in the sunset with a refreshing mint tea next to Elephant Rock (Jabal Al-Fil) in Al Ula.

Tip: The Elephant Rock site is open to visitors every day from 16:00, and the best time to visit is just before sunset.

What To See Near The Elephant Rock

You can spend a few hours near Elephant Rock, enjoying its magnificent views. I recommend also exploring other nearby sites in Al Ula to fully immerse yourself in the region’s beauty.

You could include a visit to Al Ula’s Old Town or a sightseeing tour of the Dadan Kingdom in your daily itinerary. If you enjoy hiking, there are about 4 km of trails near Elephant Rock, which take between 1.5 to 2 hours to complete. After the hike, you can enjoy a picnic next to the rock with friends or family.

I can safely say that the Elephant Rock is the iconic natural wonder of Saudi Arabia, so if you visiting Al Ula, don’t miss the opportunity to go there.

Tip: If you visit Elephant Rock and other sites during the hottest part of the day, don’t forget to take sunscreen and a hat. If you plan to go in the evening, take a jacket or sweater, because the desert is cooler at night than in the city.
