One of my favorite experiences in Mauritius was visiting La Vanille Nature Park, located in the southern part of the island. Covering 1.5 hectares since its establishment in 1985, the park is dedicated to preserving endangered species, making it a perfect spot for wildlife enthusiasts. Among its most impressive inhabitants are thousands of Nile crocodiles, which visitors can observe at various stages of life in their natural habitat.
The park is also home to the giant Aldabra tortoise, one of the largest tortoise species in the world. These incredible creatures can live for over a century and weigh several hundred kilograms. Feeding them was one of the most memorable moments of my trip. In addition to tortoises and crocodiles, La Vanille is home to monkeys, exotic lizards, and an extensive insect collection. Although signs warn of the dangers of swimming and prohibit entering the water, it’s well worth being here to listen to the “music” of the ocean and experience an oasis untouched by civilization.

Notre-Dame Auxiliatrice de Cap Malheureux
Dating back to 1938, this Catholic church is easily identified by its bright red roof, which stands out in the Mauritian landscape and adds a unique charm. Despite its modest and simple architecture, the church exudes elegance and aesthetics.

The altar, adorned with sea shells, adds a unique and unexpected touch, fitting beautifully with the church’s seaside location. Notre-Dame Auxiliatrice de Cap Malheureux is also a popular spot for weddings, drawing both locals and tourists thanks to its exquisite design and picturesque surroundings.
Chamarel Waterfall
One of the highlights and best things to do in Mauritius is to visit Chamarel Waterfall. This waterfall, a popular tourist attraction, is located in the southwest of the island. The park features hills that resemble dunes, and what’s more interesting is that each hill displays different colors: red, purple, yellow, green, blue, brown, and orange. These vibrant hues are the result of past volcanic activity.
It is important to know that this natural wonder is being preserved, and the Seven Colored Earth is fenced off to prevent erosion, the mixing of colors, and unauthorized activities such as walking on the colored sand. La Vallée Des Couleurs Natural Park
La Vallée Des Couleurs is one of the most popular parks in Mauritius, known for its diverse activities and geological uniqueness. It features many hiking trails, as well as exciting activities like the 350-meter-long hanging Nepal Bridge, which provides an exhilarating experience at heights of 80–100 meters. Visitors can also enjoy quad biking, buggy rides, various ziplining options, bicycle ziplining, karting, and more, making it a perfect spot for adventure enthusiasts.
Ganga Talao Lake
This is one of the most sacred Hindu sites. The lake lies in a spectacular location – in the mountains (about 600 meters above sea level), within the crater of an extinct volcano, in the very heart of the island. According to legend, the god Shiva poured the waters of the Ganges River into this lake, making it as holy as the Ganges itself. This belief draws a constant flow of devotees.
This crater lake is rich in fish, but fishing is prohibited. The lake is worth visiting not only for its beauty and sacred significance but also for its surroundings. There is a temple dedicated to Shiva and other Hindu gods, where devotees can be seen praying and meditating. Witnessing the Hindu ceremonies was a truly unique experience for me. The lake is adorned with colorful statues of the gods, including a 33-meter-high statue of Shiva. Surrounding the lake are sacrificial areas where believers can make offerings to the gods, typically consisting of fruits, flowers, and rice.

Casela Nature Park, opened in 1979, spans 350 hectares and is perfect for nature lovers, especially bird enthusiasts. The park is home to 140 species of exotic animals and around 1,500 bird species, including the rare pink pigeon. You’ll also find kangaroos, giraffes, rhinos, zebras, lions, giant tortoises, flamingos, peacocks, and many other animals living in habitats that closely resemble their natural environments. I highly recommend going on a safari, as it offers both the thrill of adventure and the chance to observe animals freely roaming in the wild.
For adrenaline seekers, Casela offers exciting activities such as the Tulawaka Gold Coaster summer luge, lion walks, and camel rides. Families with children will appreciate the Little Zoo, where kids can pet animals, learn about their diets, and discover more about their living conditions.

Mauritius is located 900 kilometers from its nearest large landmass, Madagascar, making the fastest and most reliable way to reach the island by plane. There are very few direct flights from Europe and Asia, so tourists usually travel to Mauritius with layovers at major international airports.
The national airline, Air Mauritius, offers several international flight routes to Europe, Asia, and Africa. Many other major international airlines, such as Lufthansa, Air France, Turkish Airlines, Etihad, and Emirates, also fly to Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU).
Climate In Mauritius
Mauritius can be visited year-round, but it’s important to note that the island only has two seasons. Summer lasts from October to March, and winter from March to October. During summer, daytime temperatures along the coast can reach 30-32°C. Rain is possible, but it’s usually brief. In winter, the weather is pleasantly warm: 24°C in the south of the island and 28°C in the north. Water temperatures hover around 24°C.
Tip: I traveled to Mauritius in February and can admit that the weather was quite exhausting for me. If possible, choose to visit during the winter season, when the weather is more comfortable both for exploring the island and relaxing on the beach. Hotel prices are also significantly lower in winter than in summer.

When planning your stay in Mauritius, the first thing you need to decide is where you want to stay. During my visit, I spent half of my time in the northern part of the island and the other half in the southern part. Although the northern coast of Mauritius is one of the liveliest and most tourist-friendly areas, I personally preferred staying in the southern part. While staying there, I felt more connected to the local culture, interacted more with locals, and enjoyed the tranquility. I’ve listed a few hotel options for different budgets, so I hope you’ll find the best one for you.
Budget Hotels
- Maison Du Nord – A 3-star hotel located in Cap Malheureux, in the northern part of the island. Guests can stay in rooms with air conditioning, balconies, TVs, and complimentary Wi-Fi.
- Pereybere Hotel & Spa – A highly-rated hotel situated opposite the Indian Ocean, near Grand Baie. The modern rooms feature flat-screen TVs and balconies with ocean views.
Mid-Range Hotels
- Domaine de Grand Baie – This hotel features an outdoor pool, free parking, a fitness center, and a shared lounge area. The spacious rooms come with air conditioning, flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, soundproof walls, kitchens, living areas, and bathrooms.
- Tamassa Bel Ombre – I stayed here for a few nights and highly recommend this place. The room was bright and spacious, with a large and comfortable bed, and the restaurant’s food was delicious. The hotel is located in the southern part of the island, making it easy to visit Le Morne and other famous attractions in this area.

How To Travel Around Mauritius
You can travel around Mauritius in various ways. During my trip, I didn’t rent a car but instead used the services of local taxi drivers, who also act as guides. This is quite a popular option in Mauritius. Such a service for a day costs around 50-60 euros. The taxi driver takes you wherever you want, whenever you want, waits as long as necessary, and shares interesting facts about Mauritius along the way.
Traveling by bus around the island is very cheap, but this mode of transport can be time-consuming. Of course, you can also rent a car in Mauritius, but it isn’t a cheap option. Additionally, you must have a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) to rent a car.
Tip: If you decide to rent a car, avoid traveling through the major cities. The traffic can be very intense, and you might get stuck in traffic jams for several hours.
For those seeking an extraordinary experience, I recommend a helicopter flight. It not only allows you to travel from one place to another but also gives you the opportunity to take a scenic tour of the island.
