The Nassif House Museum, built in 1880, is a symbol of Jeddah’s rich past and is one of the most magnificent historical buildings in Al Balad. At the same time, it is one of the most important examples of traditional Arab architecture in the city.
Main Highlights About Nassif House Museum
In 1975, the Saudi Arabian government purchased the house and turned it into a historical monument. Initially, it was equipped with a library containing 16,000 books, and the building was used as a cultural center for lectures and exhibitions.
The seven-story, 106-room house also once served as the residence of Saudi Arabia’s first king, Abdul Aziz ibn Saud.
The Nassif House Museum has two entrances: the main one from the north and another from the west. A large staircase in front of the main foyer allows visitors to access the upper floors. The museum’s spacious corridors and intricately carved wooden doors impress visitors with stunning Arabic calligraphy. Two traditional bay windows on the facade connect the two floors above the main doors with a large wooden structure. In the southeast corner of the house, there is a secondary, smaller staircase, likely used by service staff, as this part of the house contained the kitchen.
The Nassif House Museum showcases the lifestyle of Jeddah’s wealthy merchant families from the late 19th to early 20th centuries. Visitors can explore various collections of antique furniture, textiles, ceramics, and household items, providing insight into the daily life of elite families. The museum also houses extensive collections of jewelry, photographs, and early electronic devices.
The Nassif House Museum is further distinguished by a large tree standing next to it. It is believed to be the oldest tree in Jeddah, as growing it in the city, given its water scarcity, was a challenging task.
