Once one of the Habsburg dynasty’s favorite summer residences, today this little town attracts visitors with its beautifully maintained park, romantic atmosphere, and the Franzensburg Castle rising in the middle of the lake.
A single day here can feel like a true discovery – from strolling along old avenues to taking a boat across the lake that leads to Franzensburg Castle, standing proudly in the middle of the lake. Things To Do In Laxenburg
Laxenburg Church
As soon as I arrived in the town center, my eyes were immediately drawn to Laxenburg Church. This neo-Gothic sanctuary has a tall pointed spire reaching toward the sky. What I liked most were its contrasts. White, bright facades with subtle details and a red roof that gives the building an elegant charm.
Entering inside, high vaults and colorful stained-glass windows appear, with light gently streaming through them. It is not a huge cathedral like the ones you see in big cities, but precisely because of its simplicity and harmonious surroundings, it fits perfectly with the face of Laxenburg. In my opinion, it is a perfect introduction to the town – like a first friendly greeting.
Laxenburg Rathaus
Just a few steps from the church, you reach the Laxenburg Rathaus. At first glance, it is not a particularly impressive building, but that is exactly where its charm lies. A neat facade, traditional Austrian architecture, and a cozy square in front – everything reflects the spirit of a small town, where life moves at a slower pace.
Local festivals and events are often held here, and the square in front of the Rathaus is a favorite meeting place for both residents and travelers. Right here, you can enjoy a coffee or ice cream from the nearby cafes while watching the calm town life unfold.
Franzensburg Castle
The most impressive highlight of Laxenburg Park is Franzensburg Castle, rising in the middle of the lake and often called the fairy-tale castle. Construction began at the end of the 18th century on the initiative of Emperor Leopold II and it was named in honor of his son, who later became Emperor Francis I. Although at first glance the castle looks like a real medieval fortress with towers, defensive walls, and gates, its purpose was quite different – not defensive, but representative and recreational.
It is said that the Habsburgs enjoyed spending their time here in private – going for walks and organizing picnics. Empress Sisi spent her honeymoon with Emperor Franz Joseph in Laxenburg in 1854, and she returned here several times to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere away from Vienna.

Boat & Ferry Rides
If you’d like to spend more time on the water, you can rent a wooden rowboat, a pedal boat, a small electric boat, or even a cozy catamaran. These boats are perfect for a leisurely paddle around the lake, letting you take in stunning views of the castle and park from the water.
While gliding across the water, keep an eye out for the Gothic Bridge. Passing under its small arch is a fun little detail of the ride.
Another highlight is the small ferry that takes you directly to the castle gates. For me, this short crossing was especially memorable, with the castle slowly coming closer as the water sparkled beneath.
Tour of The Castle
Step inside and take a journey back into Habsburg times. Authentically restored halls, massive knight’s chambers, and richly decorated interiors help you imagine how banquets or quiet meetings once took place here. The collection of weapons, coats of arms, and historical furniture adds to the story of the imperial family, while guides often share anecdotes and legends that make the tour even more captivating.
Guided tours are available in German and English and last about 30 minutes. They usually run from Easter until early November, several times a day according to the schedule. Since the castle can only be visited with a tour, I recommend buying tickets in advance to secure your spot.
Castle Towers
Climb up one of the towers for a wide panorama – the lake, park paths, tree-lined avenues, and the outlines of Laxenburg in the distance. This spot is especially popular with photographers, as from above the castle and nature blend into an impressive composition. Visit early in the morning or at sunset for the most spectacular views.
Romantic Walks
Franzensburg Castle and the surrounding park were designed in a romantic style. Winding paths, small islands with bridges, and pavilions make it a perfect place for leisurely strolls.
The park has more than 10 km of trails, so there is plenty of space to explore. The most popular routes are Sisi-Runde, Franzl-Runde, and Rudolf-Runde, each named after members of the Habsburg family.
Depending on the path you choose, you may come across sights such as the Concordia Temple, the Gothic Bridge, or the charming Marianneninsel island. Each route shows a different side of the park, from lakeside views to shady forest paths.
Play Area for Children
Laxenburg Park is also well-suited for families – near Franzensburg you’ll find spacious playgrounds with modern attractions. Another fun way to explore the vast grounds is by hopping on the small panorama train, often called the Laxenburg Express. Best Time To Visit Laxenburg
The best time to visit Laxenburg, Austria is generally from April to October, when the weather is mild and the palace gardens burst with color. I visited in late summer, and it was the perfect time to explore the castle grounds while enjoying the calm and relaxing atmosphere of this hidden gem.
If you prefer warmer days and a livelier atmosphere, July and August are ideal for picnics and walks through the park. For a quieter experience, September and early October offer pleasant temperatures and beautiful autumn colors.
Although November and the winter months may not seem very appealing weather-wise, Laxenburg still attracts visitors during this time. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that from mid-November to mid-January, the town comes alive with Illumina. Austria’s largest light garden, turning the palace gardens into a magical wonderland of dazzling lights. Therefore, I think even in cooler weather, a stroll through the illuminated gardens will be a unique and unforgettable experience for you.
How To Get To Laxenburg
Laxenburg is located just 20 km from the center of Vienna, making it one of the most convenient day trips from the capital. You can get here in several ways – by public transport, car, or even bicycle.
By Bus
The most convenient option is bus no. 200, departing from Vienna main railway station. The journey takes about 30–35 minutes, and the final stop is Laxenburg Franz-Josefs-Platz, right in the town center, just a few minutes’ walk from the entrance to Laxenburg Park. Buses run quite frequently, around every 30 minutes on weekdays and a bit less often on weekends.
By Train
You can also reach Laxenburg from Vienna by a 20-minute train ride. From Vienna’s main station, take the R95 train to Laxenburg train station. From there, it’s about a 20-minute walk to Laxenburg Park.
By Car
Laxenburg is easily accessible by car – the drive from central Vienna takes about 25–30 minutes. There are convenient parking lots in the town center and near the park. A few spots near the Rathaus even offer free parking for up to two hours, which is perfect for a short visit. If you’re traveling with family or planning to stay longer, driving is by far the most comfortable way to get around and explore everything Laxenburg has to offer.
By Bicycle
More active travelers can cycle to Laxenburg. The distance from Vienna’s center is about 20 km, and the route follows bike paths through the suburbs, making it a fairly safe and pleasant ride. It usually takes about 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on your pace.
Once you arrive, you can leave your bike in designated parking spots near the gates of Laxenburg Park. This is a great way to combine sports, nature, and culture in one trip.
Where To Eat In Laxenburg
After a walk through the park or a visit to Franzensburg Castle, Laxenburg offers several cozy spots for lunch.
If you want to try authentic Austrian cuisine, it’s worth stopping at Laxenburger Hof – a family-run restaurant known for its warm atmosphere and dishes made from local ingredients. Here, you can enjoy ribs, seasonal stews, or classic desserts, and in the warmer months, the outdoor terrace is the best spot to sit.
For a lighter break, Cafe Meierei, located near Franzensburg Castle, is a great choice. You can enjoy coffee and cake while looking out over the lake and the castle – a truly romantic moment. If you just want a quick snack, stop by Teichbuffet next to the boat rental – simple but convenient.
