- Starting Point: Puerto Calero marina with plenty of shops and restaurants. Since I wasn’t staying in Puerto Calero, I parked my car in this parking lot. It’s just a few steps away from the start of the trail.
- Difficulty Level:The route is easy, mostly flat, and suitable for walking with children. However, if you are traveling with a toddler, pushing a stroller might be challenging in some areas.
- Ending Point: Puerto del Carmen – one of Lanzarote’s most popular resorts, always lively and bustling, famous for its excellent beaches. Of course, if it’s more convenient for you, you can start the walk in Puerto del Carmen and finish in Puerto Calero.
- Hiking Distance: Approximately 2.2 kilometers one way, though the distance may vary depending on where you start in Puerto Calero and where you choose to finish in Puerto del Carmen.
- Time Required: Usually up to one hour, depending on how many stops you make for photos, food breaks, swimming, or simply resting.
- What You’ll See: Stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean, massive lava cliffs, and small coastal coves where fishing boats remind visitors of the island’s rich maritime traditions.

You can begin your hike along the Puerto Calero to Puerto del Carmen cliff walk with a relaxing break at one of the coastal restaurants in Puerto Calero or head straight to the trail. Puerto Calero also has public restrooms and shops where you can stock up on drinks and snacks for the hike. The route is unique as it stretches along cliffs near the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, offering breathtaking views of the Atlantic’s grandeur from above for most of the way. Don’t worry – the path along the cliffs is neither difficult nor uneven, but I still recommend wearing comfortable shoes. It’s hard to get lost, as the trail is clearly marked.
As you walk, you’ll come across spots perfect for stopping to take in the breathtaking views and capturing plenty of amazing photos to remember this hike. These scenic resting areas are also ideal for a picnic if you’ve brought some food with you. Additionally, the trail runs along coastal cliffs, offering views of secluded coves and larger pebble-strewn beaches below. If you want to take a break, sunbathe, or swim in the Atlantic waves, you can descend to some of these beaches. As you hike, enjoy not only the serenity and stunning natural sounds but also the local wildlife. You might see various birds, especially seagulls gliding over the cliffs. Crabs can be spotted in rock crevices, and if you decide to swim, you might encounter colorful fish in some areas.
I’ve already mentioned that the trail is mostly flat and very comfortable for walking. However, there is one section where you’ll need to descend some steps to a rocky shore before climbing back up. This stretch doesn’t require much effort and, in fact, adds an exciting twist to the otherwise easy walk. You’ll finish the hike in one of Lanzarote’s most popular coastal towns – Puerto del Carmen, at the old harbor. After climbing the steps, you can enjoy stunning views of the town and the Atlantic Ocean.

The best time to enjoy the Puerto Calero to Puerto del Carmen cliff walk is early in the morning. Starting early allows you to avoid the midday heat and enjoy cooler temperatures, especially during the summer months. The trail is quieter in the morning, offering a peaceful experience and the chance to fully appreciate the stunning coastal views. If mornings don’t work for you, consider walking later in the afternoon when the sun is lower, creating a softer light and a cooler breeze. Avoid walking at midday, as the heat and lack of shade can make it uncomfortable.
Tips For The Cliff Walk From Puerto Calero To Puerto Del Carmen
- Wear Comfortable Shoes. As mentioned earlier, I recommend wearing comfortable shoes. The path is uneven in some places, with rocky sections and loose gravel. Sturdy walking shoes or trainers will ensure comfort and safety.
- Bring Water and Snacks. There won’t be any shops along the way, so bring enough water and snacks to meet your needs. Pack a reusable water bottle and some light snacks to keep you energized.
- Dress for the Weather. The island enjoys pleasant weather year-round with plenty of sunshine, so dress lightly, use sunscreen, and wear a hat. Keep in mind that you’ll be hiking above the ocean, where it can get windy.
- Plan Your Return. Decide in advance whether you’ll walk back, take a taxi, or use the ferry service between Puerto Calero and Puerto del Carmen.

If you still have energy after reaching your destination, you can return on foot using the same trail. However, if you feel tired, especially when traveling with children, there are more convenient and faster ways to return.
By Boat
A water route connects the start and end points, so you can take a water taxi. It’s also a fantastic opportunity to see the trail and the surrounding natural beauty from a completely different perspective – from the ocean. The journey usually takes about 15-20 minutes, and ticket prices start from €11 for adults and €8 for children (one way). I recommend purchasing ferry tickets online in advance to avoid waiting in line.
By Taxi
Taking a taxi is the quickest and most convenient way back. A taxi ride between Puerto Calero and Puerto del Carmen costs approximately €10-15, depending on the time of day and taxi availability.
By Bus
Another affordable and convenient option is to take a bus. IC Bus Lanzarote Route 161 operates between Puerto Calero and Puerto del Carmen. Buses depart approximately every hour, and the ride takes around 5 – 7 minutes. The ticket price is about €1.
